Shimla: Himachal Pradesh cabinet came out with the conclusion to cancel the construction of the Palchan-Rohtang Ropeway project in Kullu district. The 9 kms ropeway was planned to transport around 9,000 visitors between the two destination daily to decongest the Manali please refer http://travelguide.manalitourpackage.com/ -Leh Road, during the peak season between May and June, which receives heavy footfall of tourists.
The project was debatable and was opposed by previous Bhatatiya Janta party government in 2009, which was to connecte Palchan village with the 13050 feet high Rohtang pass. This year only the congress government has asked successful bidders to deposit Project development Success fee as per the provision of the Request for Proposal (RFP) document for construction for Bhuntar – Bijli Mahadev and Palchan Rohtang ropeways.
Now according to the sources, the cabinet has decided to cancel the ropeway project following the request of the taxi operators, who feared to lose business proposed to the ropeway till Rohtang Pass. “During the meeting, not only the taxi issue was there, but also the livelihood of the taxi operators and other stakeholders would also be affected by the ropeway project was discussed. In order to safeguard the interest of the 1000’s of locals involved in the tourism activities in areas the project has to be stopped,” sources said.
People of Kullu district, especially of the Manali area were against the construction of a ropeway to Rohtang Pass, as it would hamper the daily livelihood of the people, who are involved in the tourism activities. Not only the taxi operators were against this project, but Mahila Mandals and Yuvak Mandals of Manali tehsil too were against the project.
After holding demonstrations in July this year, representatives from various organizations held meeting and later submitted report and memorandum to the chief minister to shift the project to other nearby sites of tourism importance.
The project was passed to take care of the tourism management in the area and the ecology depletion taking place due to the environment pollution at Rohtang pass due to heavy influx of vehicles. National Environment Engineering Regional Institute in a report submitted to Himachal Pradesh High Count has recommended building of ropeway with suitable stops for better management of tourism in the area.
